It works by using the units serial number and what's called a 'Loop Number'. A wireless device can have more than one function. Each function is assigned to a loop. So when you learn this in you will learn the device on one zone using the serial number and the loop number assigned to the smoke detector function. Then you learn the same device in on another zone and use the same serial number and the loop number for the heat function.
