More About Z-Wave Lighting & Power Devices

Z-Wave lighting and power devices give you an added level of convenience. You can control the power to pretty much everything that you can turn on and off in your house using these Z-Wave devices. And using some of the great Z-Wave features, you can control many devices at once. For instance, if you had multiple lights scattered through the house that you wanted to be able to turn on when leaving to make it look like someone is home a combination of these devices with a Z-Wave controller would allow you to do that without having to walk throughout the house and turn on each one on.

Z-Wave lighting and power devices are about more than just convenience. They also allow you to save money over time by allowing you to closely monitor and control what devices are on. They support an all off feature so that you can make sure all devices are off with a single button. It seems like every family has at least one person that leaves a trail of lights on behind them as they move through the house. While Z-Wave will not cure the problem, it can effectively treat the symptoms by allowing you or them to turn off the lights without having to walk through the whole house again.

All the Z-Wave devices that we carry are very do-it-yourself friendly. The skill required for installation does vary depending on the device though. On the simple side, we have plug-in modules and bulbs that will utilize your existing electrical outlets. We would be hard pressed to find any DIYer that cannot install those products. On the opposite end of the spectrum are things like Z-Wave wall outlets that will require a little more knowledge to replace, but still well within the range of a DIY project. If you are unsure about installing any of these devices, please seek the help of a licensed electrician.

The easiest point of entry into Z-Wave might be with Z-Wave bulbs. Their physical installation is as easy as changing a light bulb. Then using the simple pairing process with your Z-Wave hub, you will have them up and running in no time. While the open air range of 100 feet is often enough for many homes, the Z-Wave bulbs also act as repeaters for your Z-Wave mesh network to effectively increase the range of your Z-Wave devices. We have two styles of bulbs to choose from: a standard LED bulb with dimmer (LB60Z-1) and an LED flood light bulb with dimmer (LBR30Z-1). LB60Z-1 is a Z-Wave LED light bulb that uses only 9 watts of power, but it is equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent bulb. The light is soft white with a color temperature of 2700K and a brightness of 750 lumens. It is also compatible with Alarm.com Interactive Services. LBR30Z-1 is an LED Z-Wave flood light. It is the equivalent of a 65 watt incandescent flood light, but only uses 7.5 watts. Its light is cool white with a color temperature of 5000K. The flood light has a maximum brightness of 650 lumens. Both models have an estimated life of 22.8 years when used an average of 3 hours per day.

If the bulbs are not the easiest Z-Wave device to install, the plug-in modules are. They plug into any standard outlet and have two outlets on the device. One side is Z-Wave controlled and the other is always on. They both act as repeaters for your other Z-Wave devices to help ensure reliable transmissions. There are two versions: plug-in lamp dimmer module (PD300Z-2) and plug-in small appliance module (PS15Z-2). The PD300Z-2 has a maximum load of 300 watts for the attached lights. It also has a convenient feature called Auto-sense. Auto-sense allows you to still locally control your lamp without needing to access the Z-Wave hub. It works by turning the switch on the lamp off and then on rapidly. The module is dimmable as well so that you can control the ambiance of the lighting with even more precision. The PS15Z-2 can power up to 15 amps or a ½ horse power motor. Both modules are compatible with Alarm.com.

Another do-it-yourself friendly device is the WO15Z-1 Z-Wave wall outlet. While it is fairly simple and straightforward to install, it does require some electrical knowledge to put it in. And anytime you are working with exposed wires, make sure that the power is off before doing anything. If you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or unsure with installing the device, always seek the help of a licensed electrician. The WO15Z-1 is rated for up to 15 amp or 1800 watts. It acts as a repeater on your mesh network. It is compatible with Alarm.com.

The last part is the LB65R6Z-1 recessed light retrofit kit. It has a little more involved physical installation process. Much like with the wall outlet, if you do it yourself you will be working with exposed wires. Always make sure that the power is turned off at the breaker before doing anything. It is designed to replace a 5 inch or 6 inch recessed light. It comes with a white trim ring to give the light a brand new look. The light itself uses 8.5 watts and is equivalent to a 65 watt incandescent light. The light is 650 lumens with a 2700K color temperature, giving it a pleasant soft white appearance. The LB65R6Z-1, like all devices in this category, will repeat the signals of other devices on the Z-Wave mesh network.
